Three people working collaboratively.

We Practice Salary Transparency

It’s important to us to have a compensation philosophy that reflects our values and the way we work. Our goal is for everyone to be paid well and equitably.

We practice pay transparency at OF/BY/FOR ALL. That means all salaries are publicly visible to everyone in the organization. We ensure that no full-time employee makes more than 3x any other employee in the organization, regardless of location or role. This includes the CEO.

We Don't Negotiate Salaries

We do not negotiate compensation for new or current employees. The negotiation process can introduce bias and often ends with pay inequity, especially for marginalized people. We believe that people should be paid the same amount for the same work, no matter an individual’s negotiation skills.

We don’t have ranges on salaries. We have fixed salaries based on job level, which means everyone at each level makes the same as everyone else at that same level. Every job we list includes the job's level and pay rate.

Although we see many benefits with this structure, no compensation structure is perfect. Fixing the compensation at each level can remove compensation as a tool for recognizing great work. However, compensation is only one form of recognition and we have implemented other methods of recognition including a peer-to-peer recognition platform.

Our Hiring Process

We know that it takes a significant amount of energy and effort to apply for a job. We want to honor that labor by offering transparency into our process.

We only review applications when we have an open job position. We do our best to be really clear about what skills we think will make people successful as opposed to focusing on a specific number of years of experience or educational requirements. We are only able to review complete applications to ensure that applicants start from the same place and receive the same amount of attention.

You can see our open opportunities here.

Step 1 - Application

Initial Application and Questionnaire

For the initial application, we ask for your résumé, references, and a questionnaire.

Please submit your résumé and references on the job posting to indicate interest. You'll then receive an email invitation to complete the brief questionnaire.

The questionnaire uses multiple-choice questions to ask about your ideal working environment. Choose the answer that most closely aligns with your preferences at the moment.  We want to offer the simplest way possible for you to express interest in working with us by inviting you to offer your skills and preferences for consideration.

The OF/BY/FOR ALL team reviews these initial applications and determines who will be invited to the next step. Depending on the number of applicants, this review can take between one and two weeks.

Step 2 - Interview

Asynchronous Interview

The first interview is an asynchronous video interview using Spark Hire. We know that people interviewing are in different time zones and have varied schedules, so the asynchronous video round allows people to record videos using a computer or smartphone at a time that is convenient for them.

We know that an important part of the interview process for the applicant is getting to know the team, so we record intro and outro videos so you can meet the people who the position will be working with.

The OF/BY/FOR ALL team will then watch and review the responses and decide on who we want to bring to the next interview.

Step 3 - Project

Real-Time Interview and Project

The second interview is in real-time over Zoom. This will be hosted by at least two members of the OF/BY/FOR ALL team and will involve a project. This project is meant to assess skills related directly to the job. Often times the project is something that can be completed during the time of the interview. We ensure that each applicant receives the same number of days to prepare the project so that we can assess projects that are similar to each other in terms of time commitment.

In the interview, the project is usually discussed, along with any questions that the hiring team or applicant has. After completing the round, the people in the interview decide who to move forward in the process.

Step 4 - References

Reference Checks

We contact references for the candidates who move to the final round. We will not contact those references without the candidates' express permission.

Step 5 - Final Interview

Final Interview and Offer

The final interview is a real-time discussion between the final candidates and the OF/BY/FOR ALL team. This is an opportunity for both the candidates and the OF/BY/FOR ALL team to address any lingering questions about our working processes, values, policies, or anything that would impact their decision to come work with us.

We then decide who to make an offer to. We reach out to the applicant to discuss the offer and timeline of potential start date.
